Alongside CO2 the calculator considers the greenhouse gases methane (CH4) and laughing gas (N2O) with the corresponding climate effect in relation to CO2 (CO2 equivalents), as well as flight equivalents, which also consider the climate effectiveness, e.g. of the steam emitted by airplanes at great altitudes.

CO2-factors, reference values and the framework conditions refer to the newest scientific knowledge, which are determined in cooperation with the IFEU and are updated in the carbon calculator. Please consider that even the newest factors refer to the scientific knowledge of the past years.

The development and further maintenance involved and involves the following companies and agencies:

KlimAktiv gemeinützige Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Klimaschutzes mbH
(non-profit organisation for promoting climate protection)

The KlimAktiv gGmbH has assumed the rights on the software from the avantTime GmbH and is responsible for further development, sales and further distribution of the carbon calculator.

kate e.V. Stuttgart
The carbon calculator for youths (CO2-Jugendrechner "Klimagerechtigkeit") was developed in cooperation with kate e.V. Stuttgart. kate was in charge of the content development for the texts regarding climate justice and created the global references. This action was supported by InWent, Evang. Entwicklungsdienst, Kath. Fonds and the European Commission.

Institut für Energie- und Umweltforschung Heidelberg
(ifeu - Institute for Energy and Environmental Research)

The calculations in the carbon calculator (CO2-Jugendrechner) are based on a study published together with IFEU as well as updated factors.

Bundesministerium für Umwelt, Naturschutz und Reaktorsicherheit
